The Green Ribbon Society: Become a Mental Health Leader
The Green Ribbon Society is a leadership giving circle designed to honor some of our most dedicated supporters. Individuals, businesses, or organizations that give $1200 or more annually (or only $100 per month) will automatically become members of The Green Ribbon Society, named after the international symbol for mental health awareness. A gift of $1200 covers the cost of a full six months of weekly therapy sessions for one of our clients.
Membership includes access to exclusive receptions where you can engage with community and business leaders that value innovative solutions to mental health, along with ASCC’s leadership and Board of Directors. You’ll be the first to know about exciting updates on our work and gain access to compelling social and educational events with our community partners and therapists. Members will be recognized in our Annual Report, email newsletters, and on our website. Your Green Ribbon Society membership will demonstrate your leadership in the mental health community and help ensure the longevity of our services for years to come.

Green Ribbon Society Reception at the Grand Bohemian Hotel
On Thursday, March 28th we held our second reception for The Green Ribbon Society at the Grand Bohemian Hotel. Members of our Giving Circle mingled and enjoyed delicious refreshments and light bites provided by the Grand Bohemian Hotel.
Members had the opportunity to hear from our featured speaker, Dr. Laura Jones, UNCA professor, researcher and author, who shared her thoughts on the challenges and opportunities surrounding adolescent and young adult mental health. She recalled the times of adolescence, “stretching from about the ages of 13-24 individuals in this life stage tend to be seen as emotional, moody, rebellious, impulsive, experimental, and just filled with attitude.” She explained that with so many changes that happen before the age of 24, this is a critical period of development during which 75 percent of mental health struggles arise.
The social, environmental and political concerns along with changes in hormones, social pressures, sleep and diet, individualization and the effects of COVID 19 have all impacted the increase in mental health struggles among this age group. Dr. Jones explained, “So youth are now struggling with mental health at an unprecedented rate, but interestingly those 18-24, that late adolescent period, are struggling even higher than their teen peers, with 1 in 3 reporting mental health struggles. Upwards of 40% alone have experienced clinically significant levels of anxiety.”
Dr. Jones was accompanied by two UNCA student-athlete representatives of the Athletics Mental Health Peer Ambassadors program, Justin Fleer and Kylie Cackobick, who shared their perspectives and experiences. The program has 20 student athletes which includes a representative from every single team who have volunteered to serve as representatives and an added layer of support for their peer athletes and the department. They help to break down the stigma, run workshops to build resiliency, support awareness programming at the university community levels, educate coaches and staff, and help their teammates get connected to sources of support. Dr. Jones shared, “They are an inspiration and are truly changing the face of mental health and athletics in the broader community.”
Thank you so much to Dr. Jones for her insights into youth and adolescent mental health and for all the amazing work being done through the Athletics Mental Health Peer Ambassadors program.

Inaugural Green Ribbon Society Reception
On Wednesday, August 24th we held our inaugural reception for The Green Ribbon Society, a leadership giving circle designed to engage and connect some of All Souls Counseling Center’s most dedicated supporters.
Momentum Gallery in downtown Asheville was gracious enough to host us in their beautiful two-level contemporary and modern art gallery. We had delicious appetizers provided by Equal Plates Project, an Asheville-based 501c3 that sources from small, local farmers in WNC and makes scratch-made meals to share with community members facing complex food access barriers.
We celebrated three long-standing supporters who were instrumental in helping All Souls Counseling Center grow to be the organization it is today. We are so thankful to our dear friends John Hickman, Rick Gloor, and Larry Thompson for their dedication and advocacy!
Members gathered around to hear our featured speaker, Elizabeth Likis-Werle, Ph.D, LCMHCS, who shared her thoughts on the intersection of trauma and grief/loss in modern society and how she sees this manifest in her counseling work with clients, including her work as a therapist at All Souls Counseling Center. Her message resonated with many people in the room who have experienced or know someone who has struggled with life transitions and loss during and post-pandemic.
We are so grateful to First Horizon Foundation for sponsoring The Green Ribbon Society this year!
